SKIPPER Gerry Sloan can boast a one hundred per cent winning start to the season, following Academy's second successive victory.
After accounting for BISC in the opening league fixture, his side knocked out Dungannon in the first round of the Goldblatt McGuigan Junior Cup.
This match should have been played the previous week but was rained off, and this one had a watery st
art. Only a few balls had been bowled when the players had to run for shelter, but after an hour's delay play proceeded uninterrupted.
Gerry Sloan had called correctly for the second time, and he opted to put the home side in, and this decision was fully vindicated when the locals struggled to get their total in to three figures, and were eventually dismissed for only 107 in 39.2 overs.
Former skipper Brian Boyd bowled his off spinners effectively to top the bowling figures with 4 for 23 off ten overs.
Davy Menaul also bagged a couple of victims with 2 for 21 off eight, but the main talking point was the success of sixteen year old Belfast Royal Academy student, David Moore, who marked his senior debut with 2 for 4 off only eight of his pacy deliveries.
David Greenlees took 1 for 31 off ten, and the other wicket was the result of a mix-up that resulted in both batsmen being at the same end, making the run-out a formality.
An opening stand of 94 between Peter Whitten (27 not out) and Danny Morgan (54) laid the foundation for a comprehensive win. David Greenlees departed for 9, while Davy Menaul failed to get any runs on the board, leaving Brian Kelso (0 not out) to stay with Peter Whitten until the score reached a winning total of 109 for 3.
In the next round Academy have a home tie against either Derriaghy II or Waringstown II on Saturday afternoon.
