RICHARD GREER played a major role in Templepatrick's thrilling Goldblatt Junior Cup win with only three runs to spare against Woodvale II.
The club's wicket-keeper/batsman recorded two smart catches and a stumping, and was joint top scorer with 47.
The wicket was in excellent shape at The Cloughan where the Woodvale skipper opted to put the home side in, and this decision seemed to h
ave been fully vindicated when Artie Campbell's lads were bowled out for an unconvincing 157 in the 38th over.
However some fine bowling and excellent fielding kept the wickets tumbling, and when the city side were reduced to 75 for 5 at the half-way break for drinks, it was game on.
In the later stages it was nail-biting time as Woodvale edged past the 150 mark with three overs remaining, but the ever reliable Chris Busby was the local hero, when he claimed the vital final wicket at 154, to clinch the win by only three runs.
After having been pout in Templepatrick lost Colin Morrow and Chris Busby without a run on the board, but in came skipper Artie Campbell who scored 22 in a third wicket stand of 45 with Richard Greer.
Robert Smith hit a brisk 13 before being caught and bowled, and then followed the best partnership of the afternoon, when James Jackson and Greer added another 57, for the fifth wicket, when Greer was out with 47 against his name on the card.
Jackson then marshalled the tail before finishing on 47 not out, when the last wicket went down on 157.
There were glum faces at the home table during the tea interval, and the mood did not improve when the Woodvale openers put on 37 for the first wicket, before Josh Dailly made the initial breakthrough.
Fleming continued to top score for his side with 36, but the home bowlers kept nibbling away, and after twenty-five overs the game was evenly balanced, with half of the visitors back in the pavilion. Fourteen year old Simon Beattie took a vital wicket in his three overs, but Woodvale still had plenty of overs remaining, so they were still favourites.
Scott added a valuable 26 runs to narrow the gap to single figures, and with every fielder on his toes, and every run keenly contested, Chris Busby proved to be the man for the hour, when he took the crucial final wicket.
Reflecting on the game Artie Campbell said, "We were all gutted at the tea break when we had amassed only 157, and crucially had failed to use almost twelve overs. I reckoned that on a super batting surface we should have posted in excess of two hundred runs, but poor shots and poor decision making (myself included) appeared to have been our undoing, with no fewer than five ducks on the scorecard.
"However our bowlers kept concentrating on line and length, and got their rewards. James Jackson failed to take a wicket in his first spell, but he made amends in his second when he took 2 for 11. Keith Wilson, Chris Busby and Josh Dailly each had a brace of victims, while Robert Smith and Simon Beattie each had one.
"I was delighted with the fight-back during which our fielding was of the highest standard. Our young lads are very mobile in the field, and they cut off numerous runs in a lightning fast outfield. The tension mounted as Woodvale inched towards the target, but Chris Busby, who can always be relied upon to close up an end or take a wicket, finished them off in the 48th over, when one boundary would have knocked us out," ended Artie.
In the third round Templepatrick have a home game against either PSNI or Drumaness.
The 2nd XI were scheduled to travel to play Victorians in a league fixture, but the Lurgan side were unable to field a team and therefore forfeited the points.
This weekend's fixtures: 1st XI v Cregagh, home; 2nd XI v Cregagh II, away, Intermediate cup; 3rd XI v Downpatrick IV, home, Minor Qualifying Cup.
