A CLUB record second wicket stand between Brian Kelso and Danny Morgan saw Academy safely through to the Junior Cup final.
Brain Kelso opened the batting and carried his bat for an undefeated 81, but Danny Morgan dominated the partnership of 192 runs with a knock of 113, that included 11x4s and 4x6s.
Morgan's dismissal brought no relief for the Millpark attack, for hi
s replacement, David Greenlees, hit a brisk 44 off only 24 balls, in an innings that included 4x4s and 3x6s.
After that there were minor home celebrations when David Menaul departed after scoring one run, and that brought wicket-keeper James Wix to the crease in partnership with Brian Kelso, to see Academy post an impressive 265 for 4 in their fifty overs.
Millpark never looked capable of meeting the daunting target. Failure to fashion significant partnerships made Academy increasingly odds-on favourites as the game progressed, and when the last wicket went down at 155 in the 41st over, Gerry Sloan's lads were through to their second final in four years.
The day had started badly for Gerry when he lost the toss, and was then first wicket to fall with only three on the board, but he will be looking forward to leading his side in the final against Templepatrick on August 9th.
In reply Millpark could muster only 155, with McCart their top scorer with 26. Peter Riddell returned the best bowling figures with 3 for 20, followed by David Greenlees 2 for 19, Neal Hermon 2 for 39, Lee Thompson 2 for 42 and Johnny Irons 1 for 28.
Commenting on the victory club secretary, Jack Quinn, said, "Gerry Sloan was rather surprised when the home skipper opted to field, but it turned out well for us in the end. The wicket was just a little damp following the midweek rain, so I imagine that the Millpark bowlers had fancied their chances.
"The omens didn't look good when we lost our first wicket on three, but then came that club record-breaking second wicket partnership of 192 between Brian Kelso and Danny Morgan. Danny kept pushing the score along, while Brian progressed more sedately at the opposite end, where he carried his bat for 81 not out in an innings that included ten fours.
"When Danny was out Millpark heads were already down, but they conceded another seventy runs in the final ten overs, which were dominated by David Greenlees. Our bowlers took control after the tea interval, and the result was a foregone conclusion long before the end," concluded Jack.
The final of the Goldblatt McGuigan Junior Cup was originally scheduled to be played at Comber, but the North Down's ground will be unavailable on the agreed date, so apparently the final will now be staged at Wallace Park in Lisburn.
Academy's successful cup run has left them needing to make up lost ground in their Division 1 Section 3 programme, with matches against Templepatrick, Cooke Collegians and Donacloney to be rearranged.
On Sunday 6th July the Cooke Collegians fixture will be played at Shaw's Bridge, after having been on the road on Saturday to fulfil the scheduled fixture against Belfast International Sports Club.
