THE 2008/09 rugby season kicks off this Saturday (August 23) with the traditional Ophir Sevens at The Cottonmount, Mallusk.
In the senior competition, which is scheduled to get under way at 1pm, a total of 12 teams will battle it out for the Will Totten Memorial Trophy.
The home side will be joined by teams from Academy, Ballynahinch, Bangor, Carrick, Dungannon, Holywood, Instonians, Larne, Lurgan, Randalstown and the current holders Queen's.
The tournament, which is backed by Newtownabbey Borough Council, is being sponsored by Biffa and Kukri, with several other local businesses also lending their support.
Building on the success of last year's event, the Sevens will again host a youth (under 18's) tournament earlier in the day. Teams from Ballyclare, Belfast Harlequins, Carrick, Malone, Randalstown and hosts Ophir will kick off the day's sevens action at 10am.
An added attraction this year will be a women's rugby exhibition game between the ladies of Cooke and Carrick, which is scheduled to be played before the final of the main competition.
Ophir President Cedric Bonar says he is really looking forward to Saturday's Sevens, particularly the youth tournament.
"Last year the under 18's competition was a tremendous success and we aim to build on that. This is the future of rugby, and we are fully committed to supporting and developing as many young players as possible. It will hopefully be a fun day, not just for the youth teams and their supporters, but for everyone," he commented.
Entry for spectators is free and refreshments will be available throughout the day.
Meanwhile, pre-season training is well under way at Ophir, but new players are still welcome to come along to The Cottonmount on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm.
