Ophir respond positively to early setback
OPHIR First XV bounced back from last weekend's lacklustre performance at Randalstown with a much improved display against Virginia in Co Cavan on Saturday.
The Mallusk side had a nightmare start to the match, going 7-0 down within five minutes of the kick-off, but from then on controlled the game with some impressive attacking play to take the Qualifying League points.
In difficult conditions and on a boggy pitch, Ophir had the worst possible start when some sloppy defence gifted the home side a score under the posts.
But that was as good as it got for Virginia, as Ophir responded positively to the early setback and stepped up a gear to hit back with 20 unanswered points.
A try from scrumhalf Karl Davis in the corner made it 7-5. And soon after a slick back row move from a five metre scrum saw number eight Ciaran McWilliams make the break before slipping a clever inside ball to flanker Neil Gray who crashed over near the posts.
Outhalf Ron Bell converted to leave the half-time score 12-7.
Ophir continued to dominate in all areas after the break, and some quick thinking from fullback Stuart Hooks saw him sneak in at the corner from a tap penalty to make it 17-7.
A Bell penalty 10 minutes from time put the result beyond doubt, and the outhalf almost added to his tally a few minutes later when an audacious drop goal attempt from the 10 metre line drifted just wide.
With nine wins and a draw from 13 games, Ophir will be hoping to continue their winning form in their final two matches to secure a top four finish in Qualifying League Section Three.
This Saturday Ophir Firsts have no game, but will return to action on March 15 with a Gordon West Cup group game at University of Ulster, Coleraine.
Meanwhile, Ophir Second XV lost 9-3 to Ballymoney Fourths at the Valley Leisure Centre on Saturday afternoon.
Fullback David O'Reilly's penalty was the only score the home side could manage in a game dominated by defences.
This Saturday Ophir Seconds are scheduled to take on Ballyclare Fourths at The Cloughan in the Minor League.
