TRIATHLETES of all ages and abilities are being encouraged to sign up for this year's Newtownabbey Triathlon, which will be held on Sunday 7 September at the Valley Leisure Centre.
The triathlon, which is sponsored by leading ferry company Stena Line, has been taking place for 22 years and is expected to attract over 200 competitors this year. With the closing date for entries fast approaching, Newtownabbey Council’s Sports and Play Development Officer Dean Holmes is encouraging any budding triathletes who have not yet signed up to put their names forward.

“The Newtownabbey Triathlon has built a reputation as one of the best sprint triathlons in Northern Ireland and this year looks set to be bigger than ever. Every year this event becomes more popular with entrants coming from all over Ireland and Scotland. Last year we had 150 entrants and we hope that this year we will see even more,” said Dean.

Stena Line’s UK Communications Manager Nigel Tilson added: “Stena Line is proud to support the Newtownabbey Triathlon. We have some excellent prizes to present to the winning male and female in each category and after swimming 30 lengths, cycling for 20km and running 5km I know the worthy winners will appreciate a relaxing Stena Line crossing.”

With three age categories of 16–19, 20-39 and 40+ and plenty of opportunity to spectate, it is set to be a fantastic day out for budding athletes, triathlon experts and supporting friends and family.

“Every year the Newtownabbey Triathlon brings many visitors and participants from Ireland and other parts of the UK to our area. It is a great day out for the whole community and an excellent opportunity for us to show what Newtownabbey has to offer,” said Newtownabbey Mayor Victor Robinson.

Triathlon application forms can be downloaded from www.newtownabbey.gov.uk. The entry fee for the event is £20.
