AFTER a hard fought 2-2 draw in the first leg of this Linda Welshman Cup quarter-final the Sevens went into the game with two precious away goals in the bag.
With the home advantage, the local side started brightly and took the game to the Ballymoney young guns.
The Sevens edged ahead after 16 minutes. Rab Steele whipped in a delightful free kick behind the United defence for striker Ricky Currie to gui
de the ball in off the post.
The score remained 1-0 until the break with Ballymoney rarely testing Sevens keeper Simon Steele who did a fantastic job deputising for the absent Jonny Chambers.
United started the second half well and put pressure on the Sevens' midfield.
The visitors grabbed the equaliser just 10 minutes into the second period when the referee awarded a penalty after Gavin Newburn upended their striker in the box.
Midfielder Lee McClelland stepped up and neatly dispatched the ball into the bottom right-hand corner. Simon Steele guessed the right way but could not stop McClelland's well placed spot kick.
Minutes later Rab Steele, who had a brilliant game up front for the home side, was fouled down the right after a heavy challenge. He suffered a dislocated shoulder and everyone at the Sevens wishes him a speedy recovery.
However, his replacement Simon Lennox, had a big impact on the game. With just fifteen minutes left to play Grant Connor won an important aerial challenge in midfield and it was Lennox who flicked the ball on for the predatory Currie to break through the Ballymoney back line. One on one with the keeper, Currie slotted the ball into the bottom left hand corner to restore his side's lead.
With five minutes left to play, a bursting run from full back Stephen Dallas settled the tie. Carrying the ball into the opposition box, he was fouled and the Sevens had a good shout for a penalty. But the referee played advantage and Dallas' cross was smashed into the top corner by Lennox at the back post.
N'abbey Sevens (Sponsored by Eastside Fuels): S. Steele - Dallas, Bennett, Newburn, Thompson - Connor, Moffatt, Gowdy, Osborne - R. Steele, Currie. Subs: Boyle, S.Chambers, Lennox.
