EIGHTEENTH Newtownabbey Old Boys climb back into the 2B's top two following this victory over Newtownbreda.
Mark Wilkinson had a shot well saved before 18th inched ahead; when Geordie Lynn's effort struck a stray hand. While Lynn's penalty was saved by the more legitimate hands of the Breda custodian, he was first to pounce onto the rebound.
And, with t
he wind at their backs after the break, the Monkstown side were even more in command, but they made hard work in underlining their superiority, with Fenner denied by a goal line clearance, Ryan Beattie scuffing his finish when well placed and Wilkinson having an effort cancelled out for offside, after getting onto the end of another miscued belter from Beattie.
It was Wilkinson, however, who gave 'Oliver's Army' the necessary breathing space, with a right foot drive into the bottom corner; McQuoid having supplied the ammunition.
The points were thus safely in the proverbial bag until that suspiciously offside consolation from Newtownbreda, which only served to make the match look closer than it actually was.
Next Saturday, it's back to Cloyne Crescent for the Clarence Cup visit of Division 1B side Dunmurry Young Men.
18th Newtownabbey OB: Oliver – Roughley, McKee, McGuigan, T Young – Moran, Lynn, Beattie, McQuoid – Wilkinson, Fenner. Subs (unused) Porter, Spencer.
