BRYAN Ferguson will swap Ballyclare for the African plains when he bids to climb the highest freestanding mountain in the world as part of the ultimate 10 day trek for charity.
Bryan, who works as an Environmental Engineer, will climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, rising 5,895m (19,341ft) for the Alzheimer's Society in January 2009.
The 29-year-old has already started his rigorous training regime to enable him to complete the challenge.
"We lost a very close friend of the family in January this year who suffered from dementia, so I have decided to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds and awareness for the Alzeheimer's Society," he said.
"I think the timing of the trek is quite fitting, as it will be exactly a year after we lost Mrs Agnes Marsden. Mrs Marsden had a great innings, she was 91 years old when she passed away and she was my inspiration for this challenge. By raising funds for the Alzheimer's Society I am helping provide more support for carers and people with dementia as well as joining the fight to find a cure."
"Seeing the glaciers on the summit of Kilimanjaro rising above the African plains will be a fantastic reward. Being a Geologist, Volcanoes have always fascinated me and I know one of the world's largest craters, some 1.5 miles in diameter, will welcome me to the roof of Africa."
During 10 day trek the former Ballyclare High School pupil will ascend through rugged terrain and extreme conditions. It will test his courage and endurance, as he encounters different landscapes and harsh conditions. There are five climatic zones to be negotiated on route to the summit – firstly tropical rainforest on the lower slopes, through heathland, moorland before reaching the harsh conditions at altitude of the alpine desert and finally the extreme conditions on the summit's arctic glaciers. Bryan says 'it is like walking from the Equator to the Arctic in one week.
He hopes to raise over £4000 by climbing Kilimanjaro. He is hoping friends, family and local businesses will help raise the funds over the next few months. Bryan is urging anyone who would like to sponsor him in any way to contact him at bryanferguson@live.co.uk or visit his online fundraising page at http://www.justgiving.com/bryanferguson
Bryan has organised a fundraising night in Ballyclare Rugby Club on Friday May 30th. Community Champion Jim Rainey is running his famous 'Night at the Riots' including the auctioning of signed shirts. Everyone is welcome - tickets are priced at £5 contact Bryan or Ballyclare Rugby Club.
