DUP councillor Jackie Mann has claimed that he was "slandered" by party colleagues who said that he had made "inappropriate comments" to May Fair Steering Committee volunteers as they stormed out of last month's meeting in Ballyclare Town Hall.
Following that angry meeting, several of the committee members who walked out in protest at issues previously voted on being revisited, claimed that they had been insulted by councillor Mann as they were leaving the chamber.
Three committee members
contacted the Newtownabbey Times alleging that the DUP man had branded them "thick as champ".
Councillor Mann denied the claims, saying that he never referred to anyone as "thick as champ". However, two of his party colleagues, alderman Paul Girvan and alderman Nigel Hamilton, both confirmed that councillor Mann had made "inappropriate comments" as volunteers walked out of the meeting.
During discussion of the ongoing May Fair row at their monthly meeting on Monday night, councillor Mann suggested that councillors should "stay away from the papers", claiming that he had been "slandered" by certain people in the Times earlier this month.
"I was slandered in the papers. It was lies. You were one of the ones that did it and as Mayor you should be ashamed of yourself," he told alderman Hamilton.
However, the Mayor, who didn't want to get into a debate on the issue, said he stood by what he had said. And alderman Paul Girvan vociferously defended his claim that inappropriate comments had been made by councillor Mann.
"I will stand over anything that was printed in the paper, it was not slanderous," he said.
Alderman Girvan, the leader of the DUP group on the council, assured members that he could produce five or six witnesses if necessary to back up his standpoint.
Speaking to the Newtownabbey Times after the meeting, councillor Mann said that he and alderman Girvan would be "going to a quiet room to discuss the matter further."
Several members of the May Fair Steering Committee have called on councillor Mann to publicly apologise for comments he made during the November meeting.
