A NUMBER of cars have been damaged in a car park at Sixmile Leisure Centre over the last few months, Newtownabbey's Mayor has said.
Nigel Hamilton said the incidents have happened mainly during day.
PoIice are examining recent CCTV footage from council cameras around the centre and car park.
Mr Hamilton condemned the incidents. "I would urge anyone who has any information about these incidents to contact the police in Ballyclare,2 he said. "It is disgraceful that some people want to damage other people's property like this. This busy car park is used by Ballyclare shoppers, workers and visitors to the leisure centre. During a recent incident a member of our leisure centre staff had his car damaged whilst he was working in the centre.
"The council has increased security around the leisure centre and is in close contact with the police to try to prevent further incidents. We are also reviewing the CCTV coverage of the car park and plan to add more cameras to improve surveillance. We want the local community to know that we are doing all we can to stop this mindless vandalism."
Inspector Stephen Marshall, from Ballyclare PSNI, said: "The incidents have been sporadic over the last year and we are working with the council and the leisure centre management over the security in the car park."
