A DEBT counselling charity working in Newtownabbey and North Belfast has revealed that many people are struggling financially as a result of Christmas overspending.
Christians Against Poverty (CAP), which operates a centre in the local area in partnership with Carnmoney Presbyterian Church, has witnessed the effects of Christmas overspending and is reaching out to help those who now find themselves in debt.
Bri
an Givans, Carnmoney CAP Centre Manager, confirmed that there has been an increase in demand for debt advice since the turn of the year as people struggle to pay off loans and credit card bills. He also revealed that the centre is providing a three-week money management programme next month, and that all available places on the course have already been filled.
"Whilst many have enjoyed a fantastic Christmas, the effects of overspending are now starting to be keenly felt by those in the local community," Mr Givans said.
"We are concerned that the pressure to create the 'perfect Christmas', coupled with the difficulties the recession has caused, has led to many more people being in need of our free service in the local community.
"The good news is, though, that we are able to provide hope and a solution to those who are trapped in debt in Newtownabbey and North Belfast and I know that together we will be able to help those struggling in the worst recession in 30 years.
"There has never been a more important time for people to contact us if they're in debt. I would urge anyone affected by debt not to bury their head in the sand, but to seek help as soon as possible. CAP's service is totally free and open to all, regardless of whether you're a Christian or not, so please call us and find out how we can help you," he added.
