NEWTOWNABBEY-born singer songwriter Kristyn Getty will be among those appearing at the New Horizon event which takes place on the Coleraine Campus of the University of Ulster from Saturday, July 19th to Friday July 25.
The daughter of Pastor Gilbert Lennox of Glenabbey Church, Kristyn will be appearing at the Christian convention with her husband Keith. The couple now live and tour in the United States
The New Horizon is a one-week event that attracts about 3,500 people each day on to the university campus and is a popular date in many diaries.
This year the New Horizon Board has sought to bring together a programme which will help participants discover how we can all practically and positively be 'salt' and 'light' in this changing world.
In this the 20th year of the event, the theme is 'not of the world, but in it', which will be reflected in all the areas of main stage addresses, seminars, youth programme and mission.
Four outstanding speakers, each of whom is known internationally, will contribute to the Evening Celebration. Michael Green is one of the world's leading evangelists and teachers whose past experience includes being Advisor to the Archbishops of Canterbury and York on Evangelism. He is the author of over 50 books, including Don't All Religions Lead to God?:Navigating the Multi-Faith Maze (2002).
The second Michael this year is Michael Ramsden, European Director of RZIM Zacharias Trust since its foundation in 1997. Michael is a passionate evangelist dedicated to equipping and inspiring Christians to challenge their generation with the credibility of the Gospel.
And thence to a second 'Greene', Mark Greene is known already to many in Northern Ireland perhaps through his earlier visit to New Horizon in 2000, and through conferences. Mark worked in advertising in London and New York for 10 years but is currently the Director of the London Institute for Contemporary Christianity which specialises in Biblical perspectives on contemporary culture. He is author of Imagine: How will the UK be won?, a strategic new document published in partnership with the Evangelical Alliance.
The fourth guest, speaking once in the evenings and giving the Bible Readings, is John Lennox. John is interested in the interface of Science, Philosophy and Theology and in 1998 gave the Whitefield Institute annual public lecture on the topic "Is the watchmaker really blind?" He recently debated Richard Dawkins on "The God Delusion" in Birmingham, Alabama.
Leading the praise in 2008 there is a return visit from composers and artists Keith and Kristyn Getty whose songs cross musical genres and bridge generations, for example 'In Christ Alone', penned by Keith and acclaimed British songwriter Stuart Townsend.
Main stage guests, along with many others, are contributing to the eight stream seminar programme which encompasses some 40 seminars. The streams cover the contemporary church, authentic lifestyle, 'what's happening in our world', equipping those in leadership, entering the worlds of work and education, today's culture, relevant evangelism and myths of mission. The seminars within these will seek to open up understanding of how a Christian living not of the world but in it can, or should, make a difference to society. Among areas that will be looked at are 'The Emergent Church', the 'Theology of Enough'; 'Theology for a Brave New World'; 'Talking about Suicide'; 'Ads R Us'; 'The Books of Philip Pullman'; 'The Dawkins Delusion'; 'Mission.com'. Speakers contributing include John Lennox, Desi Maxwell, Karen Jardine, David Shepherd, Rachel Gardner, Jennifer Campbell and Martin Goldsmith.
The morning Youth Programme ranges from a crèche and a Scripture Union 4-14 years programme, to 'Livewire' for those 15-18 years old; the evening has a 10-14 years 'happening'. And also in the evening after the celebration, there will be the famous Sundown options to help wind the day down gently. Fuller details on the whole week, including revised parking arrangements, are contained in the Programme Booklets available from the New Horizon Office, 12 Killyvally Road, Garvagh. t:028 2955 7157; Wesley Owen Bookshops, or can be viewed on the web site at www.newhorizon.org.uk.
