Council’s nesting tendencies take over

THE council joined in with National Bird Week and posted new bird boxes at locations around the borough.
National Nest Box Week is an annual event which is organised by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) and takes place each year between February 14 and 21, just in time for the nesting season.
With natural sites fast disappearing, such as older trees where natural nest holes form over time, the week encourages people to put up nest boxes to try and compensate for this loss.
Creating more homes for birds will also promote and enhance biodiversity and conservation of our breeding birds and wildlife.
Bird boxes, which were made by the Newtownabbey Way Green Volunteers Group, were fitted to trees around the Borough.
Rosie Irwin, trainee biodiversity officer for the council said: “Nest boxes have been fitted to trees along the Newtownabbey Way and also appear in parks and cemeteries throughout the borough.
“This is the best time of year for you at home to also put up bird boxes and invite new visitors to your garden such as the Blue Tit, Nuthatch, Great Tit and House Sparrow. The boxes can be bought in shops or why not check out www.bto.org and learn how to build your own.”
