Council agrees to adopt Fairtrade policy

THE council’s Environment Committee has agreed that the local authority should adopt a Fairtrade policy.

The decision, which still has to be ratified by full council later this month, comes after members were presented with correspondence from the Environment Minister and the Finance Minister at Stormont encouraging the adoption of Fairtrade practices within councils.

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.

DUP councillor Robert Hill said he would support the initiative as long as the policy didn’t mean the council moving away from supporting local companies.

Biodiversity Officer Lindsay Matthews stressed that the council remains committed to sourcing produce from local suppliers where possible, adding that the Fairtrade policy focuses on things that can’t be sourced locally such as coffee and cocoa.

The committee agreed that the council should adopt the Fairtrade Policy and begin the process to obtain Fairtrade status for the borough.
