Council brings prosecutions for littering offences

NEWTOWNABBEY Council has published details of a number of recent successful prosecutions taken against people for littering offences.

A summary of the latest prosecutions was presented to members of the council’s Environment Committee on Monday, September 3.

On Tuesday, July 31 at Belfast Magistrate’s Court David Connolly of Abbeyville Street was charged with failing to respond to a request for information issued under Article 20 of The Litter (NI) Order 1994 regarding litter being deposited from a motor vehicle at the car park outside the shops at Kings Crescent.

He pleaded guilty and received a conditional discharge and was ordered to pay costs of £91.

On Tuesday, July 3 at the same court Graham Wilson Crooks of Fairview Road was charged with being a person who deposited litter into the open air from a motor vehicle on January 24, 2012 at Carnmoney Road North.

He did not appear in court and was fined £40 and ordered to pay costs of £106.

On Tuesday, June 26 at Laganside Magistrates Court Norman McKeown of Farm Lodge Park, Greenisland was charged with being a person who deposited litter into the open air from a motor vehicle on December 14, 2011 at Kings Crescent, Newtownabbey.

Mr McKeown appeared in court and contested the matter. However, he was found guilty and was fined £30 and ordered to pay costs of £101.

Meanwhile, during their monthly meeting last week, members of the Environment Committee were informed that the council issued 60 fixed penalty fines for littering and dog fouling offences between May 24 and August 23 this year.

A further 14 fixed penalty notices were issued to the owners of unlicensed dogs during the same period.
