Deserved recognition for serving the community
STAFF and members of Newtownabbey Borough Council honoured some of the local authority’s longest-serving former councillors on Monday (February 28).
Following the council’s monthly meeting, former elected representatives Bob Kidd, Arthur Kell and David Neill were presented with special mementos by Mayor Paula Bradley, Deputy Mayor Tommy Kirkham and Chief Executive Jacqui Dixon to mark their years of service to the people of the borough.
Bob Kidd, an outspoken Labour representative for the Macedon area, was elected to Newtownabbey District Council in 1973 and served continuously until 1993. After a four year break he was re-elected to the council in 1997, serving until his retirement in 2001.
DUP man David Neill, having previously served on Newtownabbey Urban District Council, was elected to Newtownabbey District Council in 1973 and served continuously until 1993. During his time as an elected member for the University ward he held various committee posts and served as Deputy Mayor in 1983-84 and again in 1992.
