WITH serious food allergies on the increase, restaurants and hotels are having to do more to educate their employees about catering for people with potentially life-threatening conditions.

But staff at a Newtownabbey hotel have been praised by a leading charity for going above and beyond the call of duty to help ensure that people with severe allergies can eat out safely.

Over the past three years, Corr’s Corner Hotel has been working alongside Allergy NI to host the charity’s annual dinner and Young Person of the Year Awards - a function catering for around 100 people with an array of allergies.

And according to charity founder Maureen Paul, the dinner is unique in the UK and Ireland, and possibly the only such event for severe allergy sufferers anywhere in the world.

With the charity’s third annual dinner just over a week away, Maureen spoke to the Times about the extreme lengths management and staff at Corr’s go to to ensure guests can eat out safely.

The charity previously approached six other hotels and restaurants about holding their annual dinner, but none were keen to cater for so many people with such a wide range of allergies.

“But for Corr’s I don’t think we would ever have been able to hold this dinner. A lot of kids and a lot of families would miss out on the opportunity of eating out, and it’s a fantastic night,” she said.

“We would have quite a number of families who’d never have eaten out together before until they came to our annual dinners. We would also have a lot of children and teenagers who’ve never eaten anywhere outside their home before. The kids love it and the parents love it - the fact that they can enjoy the atmosphere and all eat out as a family.”
