Landlord fined over eviction

A NEWTOWNABBEY landlord has been fined £200 for illegally evicting his tenant.

At Belfast Magistrates Court on Tuesday, January 24, James McCabe, from St Anne’s Mews in Glengormley, was also ordered to pay costs of £72.

The prosecution was brought by Belfast City Council following a complaint from the tenant in January 2011 when she was locked out of her rented accommodation at Glenbank Place, Belfast.

A spokeswoman for Belfast City Council said: “We are pleased with this ruling as it reminds landlords that tenants are entitled to the full protection of the law. We work extremely hard with landlords to raise awareness about the rights of tenants and information about current legislation can be found on the council’s website.”
