Mallusk and Hydepark residents have their say
THE People’s Church on Mallusk Road was the venue for Mallusk Community Action Group’s (MCAG) recent Annual General Meeting.
Among those in attendance were more than 30 local residents, community group members, Danny Kinahan MLA and local councillors Mark Cosgrove and John Blair.
Reports were given by various MCAG officers, following which the meeting heard updates on the Village Action Plan and the refurbishment of Academy Sports Club. Other issues discussed on the night included road safety, the possibility of reducing the speed limit outside the primary school and the need for a pedestrian crossing at Parkmount.
Darren Cooper, manager of the Biffa landfill facility, fielded questions about odours and road/path cleanliness, as well as potential changes to operations at the Cottonmount site.
It was agreed that two members of the committee should visit a similar site in England to see how things operate there, and meet with a residents’ association in the area to compare experiences/knowledge.
MCAG thanked The Peoples Church for the use their facilities for the AGM and all the residents and political representatives who attended.
The group’s new office bearers were elected at a meeting on Thursday night (November 22). Richard Gregory was elected Chairperson, Deborah Finlay Vice-Chair and Bronagh Petticrew as Secretary.
Meanwhile, Newtownabbey Borough Council has confirmed that public consultation is to take place regarding a proposal by MCAG to rename Mallusk Play Area after local writer and poet William Morrison - the man known as The Bard of Mallusk.
“Consultation will take place with residents and the community group early in the New Year,” a council spokesperson commented.
Urging local residents to back the proposed name change, UUP councillor Mark Cosgrove said the move would “help create a further sense of community in the area.”
