MLA backs tougher dog control measures
EAST Antrim MLA Alastair Ross has given his support to Newtownabbey Borough Council’s new Dog Control Orders, which are due to come into force next month.
From February 1, the council will be able to impose heavier fines on irresponsible pet owners.
“Dog fouling on footpaths continues to be one of the biggest complaints from constituents in their local areas, and indeed only last week I have been working with the council and local residents to increase the provision of dog bins within the Monkstown estate,” Mr Ross commented.
“Fouling on footpaths without removal, taking dogs into play parks or onto playing fields and not using a lead when directed are issues that the residents of the borough have supported during the public consultation period.
“It is worth noting that responsible dog owners have supported these measures and recognise that there is only a small number of persistent, inconsiderate owners at whom this local government legislation is directed,” the DUP man added.
Meanwhile, the council is currently seeking people’s views on plans to introduce dog exclusion zones in designated public places.

Members of the public are being invited to submit views and opinions on the proposed legislation in writing before February 7.
