More dog waste bins for Monkstown

EAST Antrim MLA Alastair Ross has praised the Monkstown community for its efforts in trying to clean up the area.

Recently the council increased the number of bins in the area for dog waste, in response to a request from local residents.

The new bins are located at Devenish Drive and Ards Drive and complement the existing provision already in the estate.

Mr Ross congratulated the council on its quick reaction to the request for more bins, he said: “I was contacted by local resident David Hamilton regarding a potential increase in dog bins in the Monkstown estate.

“I must commend Newtownabbey Borough Council for responding to the request in such a speedy manner. Dog fouling is a serious issue and is one of the top complaints for constituents.

“The council is bringing in much more stringent dog control measures that will target irresponsible owners but the issue of dog bins is one that also affects those responsible dog lovers.

“This will mean that people out walking their dogs will be able to dispose of the waste that they have collected much more quickly.”

David Hamilton, who contacted Mr Ross, added: “I know many people in the estate are frustrated by the amount of dog dirt on the footpaths and grassy areas, and so I asked Alastair if we could get more dog bins in the problem area.

“I am very pleased that he was able to get them installed within weeks and hope that dog owners will now use them.”
