SECRETARY of State, the Rt Hon Theresa Villiers MP was given a first class welcome when she visited the Northern Ireland Mail Centre in Mallusk last month.

The Secretary of State was shown around the hub of Northern Ireland’s postal operation and met local postal workers as they pulled out all the stops to collect, sort and deliver Northern Ireland’s festive mailbag of millions of Christmas cards, letters and online shopping orders.

“I am delighted to be here and see for myself the extraordinary team effort that goes into sorting Northern Ireland’s Christmas mailbag. It’s a massive logistical task and I’d like to thank postal workers across the country for doing a fantastic job,” she commented.

To handle Northern Ireland’s Christmas mailbag, Royal Mail had to lay on five additional flights daily, boost its normal 1,200-strong vehicle fleet with 100 extra vans and trucks and employ a team of several hundred additional temporary workers to support its 3,200 postmen and women.
