Photographer’s plea for return of stolen equipment
A PHOTOGRAPHER robbed at knifepoint after the disorder at Cloughfern Corner on Friday night has appealed for the return of his equipment.
Freelance photographer Joel Goodman has said the theft of the equipment, valued at over £8,000, has left him seriously out of pocket and with no way to earn a living.
The incident occurred around 9.30pm on the Station Road when the photographer and two others were walking towards the Shore Road.
“He jumped out of a bush with a huge hunting type knife about six inches long and demanded my cameras,” said Joel.
“It was a real big knife so I was not going to argue with him so I handed over the equipment.”
Joel said the attacker was around 17 years old and about 5ft 9”, slim and spoke with a local acent.
He said the man had his face covered but wore baggy lose tracksuit bottoms and was last seen crossing the railway tracks at Whiteabbey train station.
Joel added: “At the time I thought it was a street robbery, but the more I think about it the more I wonder why he wanted very specialised equipment that would not be easy to pass on.
“He didn’t want my mobile or my wallet and he paid no attention to the two others I was with. I couldn’t say if the incident was connected to what happened earlier that night or not.”
Stolen in the robbery were two Canon cameras an EOS 1-D IV serial number 06300501671 and a 5Dii serial number 1330804112. Two lenses, a Canon EF70-200 f/2.8 IS II USM serial number 133037, a Canon EF24 f/1.4 USM II serial number 3028083 a Canon 580EXii flash gun and two Kingston 16GB CF memory cards.
Joel has made an appeal for the equipment to be returned.
“This has done me serious damage. I am self-employed so it was my own personal camera they took that I need to do my job and I also can’t earn money without it, so it is still hurting,” he added.
“I would appreciate it greatly if anyone could help me get back the equipment.”
Police in Newtownabbey have appealed to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area or with any information about the incident to contact detectives at Newtownabbey on 0845 600 8000, or if someone would like to pass information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
