Whiteabbey man on firearms charge

A WHITEABBEY man has been remanded in custody charged with having firearms and ammunition in connection with the recent Union flag related violence.

Philip Charles Lavery was arrested during searches of a house in Kings Way.

Detectives from the Operation Dulcet inquiry team which is investigating incidents connected to the ongoing loyalist protests and public disorder throughout Northern Ireland carried out the searches last Thursday (February 14).

Lavery (43) appeared in Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Friday (February 15) charged with two counts of possessing a firearm in suspicious circumstances, one count of possessing ammunition in suspicious circumstances and one count of dishonestly using electricity.

Lavery was refused bail and was remanded in custody to appear again via video link on March 1.

Meanwhile two others arrested during the search - a 24-year-old man and a women aged 45 - were released on police bail pending further inquiries.
