ONE of Glengormley's best known and most respected family doctors has died suddenly at the age of 60.
Dr. Dermot Neary had been a partner in Tramways Medical Centre since its opening 10 years ago.
Born and brought up in Belfast, he was educated at St. Malachy’s College, Antrim Road, and studied medicine at Queen’s University.
After qualifying in 1973, Dr. Neary worked in a number of hospitals, including Whiteabbey. In 1977 he joined his father, John, who was already an established GP in Glengormley.
Their practice, based at Carnmoney Road Health Centre, was later joined by Dermot’s brother, John. Following their father’s retirement, the two sons were instrumental in the opening of a new medical centre, Tramways, in the heart of Glengormley.
A keen sportsman, Dermot was an international water polo player and coach. A former team captain at Malone Rugby Club, he also played chess and snooker for St. Malachy’s Old Boys.
A talented amateur musician, he enjoyed singing and playing the guitar.
Following requiem mass in St. Gerard’s Church, Antrim Road, yesterday (Wednesday), Dr. Neary was laid to rest in St. Nicholas Cemetery, Ardglass.
He is survived by his wife, Maire, sons Rory and David and daughters, Katie and Sarah.
