THE M2 motorway between Sandyknowes and Greencastle will be closed for long periods this weekend as work takes place to demolish part of the Collinbridge Road bridge in Glengormley.
Roads Service is replacing the existing 50-year-old bridge over the M2 as part of ongoing road improvements and widening of the motorway.
Highway Management Construction (HMC) will be demolishing half of the Collin Bridge from tomorrow (Friday). W
orks will be carried out on Friday night from 10pm - 6am, on Saturday from 10pm - 11am and on Sunday from 10pm to 6am.
HMC workers have been carrying out preparatory works all week to ensure that the demolition can be completed within the allotted timeframe.
"During the demolition it will be necessary to close the M2 motorway between the Sandyknowes and Greencastle junctions. Signed diversion routes will be in operation between the two junctions," a Roads Service spokesperson explained.
"Access to the Collinbridge area will be maintained throughout the demolition. Traffic crossing the bridge will be controlled by STOP/GO boards. There may be a slight delay for vehicles accessing the Collinbridge area, however, disruption will be kept to a minimum.
"Roads Service and HMC apologise for any inconvenience caused by this essential bridge replacement work."
Special arrangements will be in place for the emergency services during the demolition. Once the part demolition is completed traffic management on Collinbridge Road will return to the current temporary single lane arrangement.
As part of the Department for Regional Developments's ongoing motorway widening scheme between Sandyknowes and Greencastle the existing bridges at Hightown Road and Longlands Road will also be replaced.
