'A white elephant would have been better'

I have now found out that the mystery object in the middle of the roundabout on the Shore Road is something nautical.
Apparently it is a ship's mast. I have been on many ships but never saw a mast that shape before.
I am led to believe it is connected with Whiteabbey's seafaring past, with part of the old pier still standing. One wonders how two Kelly coal boats every week makes it a sight of nautical importance.
The mast, I am told, is to raise the profile of the village as a tourist attraction. But there is no village at Whiteabbey to visit. Only two rows of old mill houses, four ex coastguards houses and a chip shop. The old St James' School is now private apartments.
What a wonderful place to bring visitors to. Will there be guided tours of the area?
I hope the council has not spent any money on this tourist attraction. A white elephant would have been better, at least the public could have identified it correctly.
