I MUST support the action taken by Ballyclare High School in suspending the pupil who flouted school rules by refusing to have his hair cut to regulation length. The mistake the school made was in allowing the pupil to return without his conforming to school rules.
What a pity his father did not give wise counsel to his son and advise him to adhere to school regulations rather than give him sympathy because he was isolated from his classmates.
The pupil's future is in his own hands. He can eat humble pie, which can be hard to swallow, have his hair cut and return to lessons in class, or resign from the school if he can no longer accept school discipline. The latter choice would make it difficult to secure a placement in another grammar school.
Be wise, young man. There's plenty of time to grow your hair after school days. Don't jeopardise your career for the sake of two inches.
