- After reading your article about the shortage of plumbers in Newtownabbey I think that your readers should be aware that the Plumbing Industry Licensing Scheme (PILS) which was launched in Northen Ireland in 2006 does provide consumers with a database of reputable local firms who meet a list of agreed industry standards including the use of properly trained staff and the possession of relevant public liability insurance.
The scheme also offers an independent complaints resolution scheme, providing peace of mind for customers and endorsing reputable plumbing companies whose image has in the past been tainted by the actions of a few unscrupulous "cowboy" operators.
Ar
ound 60 plumbers from across Northern Ireland have already signed up to be part of the new Plumbing Industry Licensing Scheme, which is run by the Scottish & Northern Ireland Plumbing Employers Federation (SNIPEF).
Details of all PILS registered plumbers can be found at www.needaplumber.org
SNIPEF Director Robert Burgon said: "It's in everyone's interest to have this kind of initiative. Consumers have peace of mind that their interests are being protected, and plumbing businesses will be able to enhance their reputations as trustworthy, hard working, skilled workers as a result. We hope that customers will use the Licensing Scheme and its list of accredited plumbers as their first point of contact when choosing a plumber and believe that the initiative will protect the future of the industry by ensuring that it is held in the highest regard by both businesses and householders across Northern Ireland."
He added: "The overwhelming majority of traders within the plumbing industry take great pride in their work and this scheme helps to distance them from the rogue element that has been a blot on the industry's reputation."
The PILS also has the backing of the Consumer Council.
