Appeal for help tracing family tree

AN AUSTRALIAN woman with family ties to the Newtownabbey area has appealed for help in finding information to retrace her family tree.

Gillian Branagan visited Monkstown in May to search for her great-great-grandmother’s grave - believed to be in the ancient Monkstown cemetery - but her search proved fruitless.

She said: “I visited in May but did not find the cemetery, even though I was close by at my great-great-grandfather’s house, Hazeldean.”

Monkstown cemetery has become overgrown and is virtually inaccessible.

Newtownabbey Borough Council is currently examining options to redevelop the former church and graveyard, believed to be the burial place of the King of Scotland, King Fergus, to promote it as a tourist spot.

Gillian continued: “I would support any moves to restore this historic graveyard.

“If anyone can provide any information about the Thomas Earle Weekes family of Hazendene or the Carbery Baldwin Egan or Jeanette Isabella Egan family I would very much appreciate it.”
