BAWNMORE and District Residents’ Association will be holding a health day, on Friday March 22, at Millgreen Youth Centre, from 10am until 4pm.

Therapists will be giving head and back massages as well as acupuncture and iridology.

Two guest speakers from Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon will speak about the abuse of alcohol and living with the effects at 11.30 am.

A life coach from Depression Awareness will also be taking part as well as representatives from PIPS, FASA as well as the Borough Council’s community safety environmental healht department.

There will be an address by the Mayor of Newtownabbey Alderman Victor Robinson at 12.30 pm followed by a buffet.

The Action Cancer Big Bus will also be present. It will be available at the Fitness First carpark, Dandy Street, from 9.30 am until 3.30 pm. For an appointment, phone 90803344.

The Big Bus provides two services which are now available to book. If you are a woman in your forties, you are eligible to make an appointment for breast screening on the unit. The charity is the only place in Northern Ireland for a woman of this age to avail of a breast screening for free. The screening takes only a few minutes and for the majority of women, provides peace of mind.

Health checks are open to all, regardless of age and gender, and they are a great way to get a current picture of your health.

The check takes about 20 minutes and can include blood pressure, cholesterol levels and peak flow. There are also body composition scales to receive a print out of details such as muscle mass, hydration levels, fat around your organs and BMI.

The health promotion officer carrying out this assessment will be able to provide advice and information about lifestyle improvements and cancer prevention.
