THE council-backed Litter Champions initiative is aiming to encourage more people in local communities to make a difference by challenging attitudes towards littering.

There are already many local volunteers hard at work all over Newtownabbey helping to tackle the litter problem. Some collect litter from the coastline, some from local walking routes and others are working to improve their local neighbourhoods.

Local people who sign up to become a ‘Litter Champion’ and organise clean-ups around the streets of their neighbourhood or in local parks will receive a free litter picker and a volunteer information pack.

It’s hoped that Litter Champions will become role models for their local communities, helping to reduce the problem of littering across the borough.

For information about how to get involved, email Amanda Wilson at litterchampions@gmail.com or go along to the project launch on Saturday, July 28 at the summertime event at Mossley Mill between 12 noon and 3pm.
