Barnardo’s Dr B’s Kitchen catering trainees Danielle Carter (18) from Newtownabbey and Emma Walsh (21) from Newtownards are celebrating after winning silver medals in the Ability Section at the recent IFEX Catering Awards held at the King’s Hall.

The double silver win comes in the same year as Dr B’s Kitchen celebrates its 21st anniversary. The restaurant has been at its original site at Bridge Street, Belfast since Barnardo’s opened it in 1991. The aim of the restaurant is to provide training for young people with learning difficulties for a career in the hospitality industry - and to date has had an 80 per cent success rate in placing young people in full-time employment.

Dr B’s Kitchen Manager, Clare McCaughey said: “We are delighted with Danielle and Emma’s medals. They worked incredibly hard practising for the competition which is carried out under strict time restrictions and directly under the judges’ eyes. It is a pressurised competition - they are judged on everything from preparation to presentation. The girls were up against the best and we are so proud of their result. It is the fourth year Dr B’s Kitchen has had medal winners at the catering awards and this year is all the more fitting because it is our 21st anniversary.”

For the competition Danielle prepared a roast cod fillet with black pudding and crushed potatoes, served in a saffron and mussel cream, while Emma served pan fried salmon on a warm bean salad with a sundried tomato and basil baklava, accompanied by a shot of vodka salsa.
