Newtownabbey Times photographer Freddie Parkinson was named News Press Photographer of the Year at the Northern Ireland Press Photographers’ Association annual awards last Thursday.

Freddie won this year’s award for his picture of a female protester confronting a line of riot police following an Orange Order parade. He is holding a framed copy of the image in the picture.

This latest success follows a string of awards for Freddie at the NIPPA awards. Last year he was named Provincial Press Photographer of the Year and also won the Provincial Merit Award – his fourth success in that category in as many years.

Freddie started at the Dromore Leader more than 20 years ago and also worked at the Ulster Star and Lurgan Mail before joining the Newtownabbey Times.
