NEWTOWNABBEY Marks & Spencer employee, Gary Baxter, has won the prestigious title of ‘Best Volunteer for Ongoing Community Involvement’ in the UK at the retailer’s annual Plan A Volunteer Awards.
Plan A champions help deliver M&S’ eco and ethical programme at store level and Gary, who works at the M&S Abbeycentre store, was nominated for the title as a result of his commitment to Plan A, which aims to make M&S the world’s most sustainable major retailer by 2015. He was named for dedicating over 60 hours of his time each month to a number of organisations and charities in Northern Ireland and further afield.
Most notably, Gary spent two weeks in India supporting an orphanage which cares for children whose families are too poor to look after them. The experience prompted him to raise £28,000 to help build an orphanage for 100 children in Tanali, India.
Gary also spends time volunteering at the Northern Ireland’s Children’s Hospice and with the Forum for Action on Substance and Alcohol Abuse (FASA).
