YOUNG men from Glengormley High School joined groups from six other schools and colleges across Northern Ireland for a week of work experience with a twist at Ballykinler Army base recently.
The work experience, or ‘WEX’ is run by the Army Recruiting Team and is an initiative that is unique to Northern Ireland. The programme, which is CCEA approved, offers an alternative to the traditional office based work experience and aims to give young people a taste of what life in the Army is like.
Corporal Ruth Millar, from the Army Recruiting Team said: “The WEX is a great opportunity for young people to get hands-on, practical experience of real Army training. They seem to really enjoy it and come away with enhanced skills in areas such as teamwork, leadership and discipline - things which can then be applied to any eventual career and even to their work when they get back to school.
