Dramatic treats are on offer at 60th anniversary festival

The Association of Ulster Drama Festivals is celebrating 60 years of drama with a Festival of Drama from May 14 - 19 at the Theatre at The Mill, Newtownabbey at 7.45pm each evening.

There is a different play each night so there’s something for everyone from comedy to drama and everything in between. The six teams taking part have competed in 11 festivals all over the province so the audience will be able to see the best of drama in one week.

President, Dame Mary Peters will be on hand to support all the teams. She said: “In this Olympic year we are continually reminded of the preparation which our athletes are going through in the hope of appearing, and even winning a medal at the games.

“As President of the Association of Ulster Drama Festivals I can also equate the hopes and expectations of these athletes to those who have sought to win a place at the Ulster Drama Festival.”

Adjudicator, Russell Boyce, former Dean of Drama at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, will be casting his expert eye over all the plays and declaring a winner on the Saturday night. Russell has adjudicated all over the world including Europe and the Far East and it’s a great privilege to have him at the local festival.

The programme is as follows:

Monday, May 14: Rosemary Drama Group, When We Are Married by JB Priestley.

Tuesday, May 15: Letterkenny Music and Drama Group, 39 Steps by John Buchan.

Wednesday, May 16: Estuary Players, Three Days of Rain by Richard Greenberg.

Thursday, May 17: Clockwork Theatre Company, The Increased Difficulty of Concentration by Vaclav Havel.

Friday, May 18: Holywood Players, The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde.

Saturday, May 19: Silken Thomas Players, Jerusalem by Jez Butterworth.

Tickets cost £12 (£10 concession) per night. Festival tickets are also available at £60 (£50 concession).
