Festival final at the Mill

The Associations of Ulster Drama Festivals are delighted to be hosting the Northern Ireland Festival of One Act Plays at Theatre at the Mill, in Newtownabbey, on Saturday January 26.

The finals consist of three separate one act plays from the best of the One Act festivals which took place in November.

The festival kicks off with The Lurig Drama Group’s presentation of “The Duck Variations” by David Mamet.

An amusing insight into the minds of two retired men in their sixties who enjoy each other’s company when they meet in a park where they come each day to feed the ducks and discuss life, death and – ducks! A gentle and amusing comedy. This play gained first place in three out of the four festivals it entered.

Secondly, is Newpoint Players’ version of “The Yalta Game” by Chekov adapted by Brian Friel.

At an end of season resort on the shore of the Black Sea, a pair of strangers play “The Yalta Game” – discussing the lives of other holiday makers, or investing the lives of others with imagined life. These companions seek an end to their loneliness by throwing themselves into the game.

Finally, Belvoir Players present “The Extraordinary Revelations of Orca the Goldfish” by David Tristram.

For Henry and Alice Smith, life is rarely dull as fantasy blurs into reality. Secret passions explode and two worlds which seemed a million miles apart are suddenly on a collision course. It could only happen to Henry and Alice. This year’s one act finals will be adjudicated by Colin Dolley GODA who will determine the winning play to go forward and represent Northern Ireland at the British Finals.
