CAROLHILL Road residents officially launched their Neighbourhood Watch Scheme this week.
The scheme was set up by residents Marion Dunbar and Joan Cosgrove and is aimed at bringing the local community together to help deter would-be burglars.
Marion told the Times: “There have been a few burglaries in the area of late and we got in touch with the police about setting up a neighbourhood watch scheme.
“After getting the proper accreditation and paperwork signed, I am delighted that our Neighbourhood Watch is up and running.
“The scheme also helps to bring the community together and already we have had a few people striking up friendships and that helps build on our community spirit and will provide a further deterrent to criminals.”
Constable Mark Crozier, Neighbourhood Watch coordinator added: “This is not an onerous task, but one which has great potential for fostering community spirit and can help residents play a part in reducing opportunities for crime and the fear of crime itself.
“It also helps the police to distribute information about crime or important messages from police or the Neighbourhood Watch among the local community.”
Councillor Mark Cosgrove, who grew up on the street, said: “Having grown up, lived in the area and canvassed it widely during the last election campaign I am well aware of the significant desire from the residents to set up this Neighbourhood Watch scheme.
“I am really pleased that Marion and Joan have decided to meet that clear demand and hope all the residents in the area cooperate with them for the betterment of the community.”
