Recognising Rathcoole’s heroes

NEWTOWNABBEY Community High School, along with the Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership, has issued a call to the community to help compile a book on Rathcoole’s heroes.
The school’s children in the Princes Trust Group along with groups from the community are putting together the book to recognise those people who have achieved top honours in their chosen field, or who deserve special recognition for their work in the community.
In the new year both young and old will come together to publish the book, provisionally titled ‘Born and Bred’.
Newtownabbey Community High teacher and project coordinator, Garry Armstrong said: “We want to get as broad a range of people involved as possible, we do not want to rule anyone out and importantly we want to get as many people in the community involved as possible.
“The community will put forward names of those that should be included and then the children will research and compile each individual which will produce a valuable document for the people of Rathcoole and beyond to enjoy and preserve for others.”
He added: “This project helps the children in many ways.
“It develops their interpersonal skills, creativity, communication and ICT skills and gets them involved in the community.”
Sara Barkley from the Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership added: “This is a good opportunity to develop and build on social inclusion within the community.
“And bringing together the different generations within Newtownabbey has added benefits of fostering community spirit.”
The Newtownabbey Times own photographer Freddie Parkinson has also volunteered his services to help develop the project.
Freddie is helping put together the material on the individuals to be included in the book.
He said: “It could be anybody and everybody, there are no restrictions on who it could be that we include in the book.
“But the important thing is that everyone has their say and gives their thoughts on who should be in the book and importantly why they should be in it.”
