NEWTOWNABBEY siblings Paula and Gavin Johnston conquered the UK’s highest mountain recently as part of a gruelling charity challenge.
Paula from Rathcoole and Gavin from Rushpark were among a group of more than 50 fearless fundraisers who climbed for five hours to reach the 4,400ft summit of Ben Nevis, helping raise more than £51,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society.
Thanks to the generosity of their sponsors and local businesses, Paula and Gavin raised more than £1,200 for the charity, which will use the money to provide vital services for people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Paula and Gavin, who took on the challenge in memory of their late grandparents, who both suffered from Alzheimer’s, expressed their gratitude to Hendersons, Jordanstown Real Estate and all the friends and family who backed their fundraising effort.
“We would like to thank everybody who helped us raise over £1,200 towards the overall total. We couldn’t have done it without everyone’s support, especially our friends and family,” Paula said.
Despite the struggle to reach the summit, and the sore feet the following day, the siblings say they haven’t ruled out tackling the mountain again for a future fundraiser.
