Ballyclare teenager Lauren Penman was among the thousands of revellers who enjoyed the star-studded MTV European Music Awards bash at Belfast’s Odyssey Arena on Sunday night. Here the 19-year-old journalism student reflects on what, for local music fans, turned out to be a night to remember...

Having been held in almost every major city across Europe, Belfast was honoured to finally play host to the MTV European Music Awards on Sunday night. Hosted by Selena Gomez, the Odyssey Arena came alive as global icons including Lady Gaga and Coldplay took to the stage to entertain the world from our capital city.

The vast majority of the Belfast crowd had been selected through careful casting at the Waterfront Hall last week, to ensure the crowd would portray Belfast in the best possible light, and this certainly had the desired effect. The crowd were in top form from the beginning of the opening act, flashing wristbands littering the crowd like fireflies as Coldplay took to the stage singing their latest single Every Teardrop is a Waterfall. From that moment on, the atmosphere was electric and echoes of the amazing Belfast audience singing along to every performance could have been heard from outside the arena.

The awards themselves presented a great deal of excitement, as fans tried to out-cheer each other for their favourite act. A buzz flew through the crowd as each celebrity stood upon the central podium to present the awards, with stars such as The Hoff, Jersey Shore’s Snooki and JWoww, and Hayden Panetierre taking to the stage to hand over those stunning MTV trophies.

Much to the delight of her fans, it was a fantastic night for Lady Gaga, who in an eccentric silver ensemble, scooped up three awards for Best Female, Best Song and Best Video.
