A Ballyclare man won 38 awards at a flower show held at Glengormley Presbyterian Church in 1965.

Hugh Blair, from Green Road, collected 27 firsts and 11 seconds, including the Porter Cup for cut flowers; Gordon Cup for vegetables and Minford Cup for the Most Plants in Show.

Mr S.W Smith, from Hazelwood Park, won the Home Gardener Blue Ribbon for the Most Outstanding Exhibit in the floral, fruit and vegetable sections.

The opening ceremony of the 23rd annual flower show was carried out by the Lady Mayoress of Belfast Mrs W Jenkins.

The prizewinners were announced by honorary secretary Bob Anderson before the prizes were awarded by the mayoress.

Proceeds from the show were donated to the church’s repairs and renovation fund.

A new church building was opened in November 1956 by Rev Tom Barker, Moderator of the General Assembly.

The most significant contribution to the building fund was made by Rev Dr Robert Barron who left the sum of £17,000 to Glengormley Presbyterian in his will.

The congregation was mourning the death of Rev Samuel McKinley, who died on August 12 whilst on holiday.
