"THE Ballyclare May Fair must be looked at, and if it is to continue, then it should be restricted in its duration and become self sufficient in terms of its funding."
That is the view of Newtownabbey councillor Billy Webb, who said as much at Monday night's meeting of the Council's Development Committee.
The Alliance councillor, who represents the Macedon area, made the comment as he asked for his name to be removed from membership of the Ballyclare May Fair Sub Committee.
"I believe the council must review funding for the Ballyclare May Fair, and if we are funding it, to only do so for one day. One day is more than enough."
Mr Webb claimed the annual event costs the council the guts of £45,000, and he believed this to be "a colossal waste of ratepayers' money, particularly in current times of economic hardship."
"The Fair is in the main, social activity for the people of Ballyclare, and it is proving very costly for everyone else in the borough," said Mr Webb.
"It had been hoped that the Fair would eventually have become self supporting, with businesses and other local concerns sponsoring it, but this has not happened.
"If anything, the May Fair appears to be doing more damage than good to local retailers, with traffic diverted away and metal barriers placed down the Main Street on the main Fair day, which makes it very inconvenient for those people who wish to get to the shops."
Mr Webb acceded that the Fair was protected by Royal Charter but it was his view that its duration should be shortened to just the Tuesday - and perhaps even one additional day, but no more than that.
Ballyclare councillors Vera McWilliam and Paul Girvan both defended the traditional event, and pointed out to Mr Webb that the Loughshore Festival held in his neck of the borough, was equally expensive to stage.
