MORE than 1,000 pupils at Ballyclare High School braved the wet and windy weather last Thursday (November 12) to set a new Guinness World Record.
Staff and students gathered at the school's George Avenue sports pitches to take part in the world's biggest ever physical education class.
A total of 1,050 pupils and teachers helped smash the existing World Record by participating in a PE lesson which took the form of a 20-minute football coaching session.
The World Record bid was the brainchild of Andrea McCullough, Head of PE at the school.
"Ballyclare High School has always been proactive in the promotion of a healthy lifestyle. It really is central to the school's ethos to embrace healthy living, so the record attempt seemed like an innovative and fun way to get that message across," she explained.
"Football is a popular sport in school and it is accessible for all. It is a sport for everyone and the UK's fastest growing female sport. We are particularly grateful to the IFA for their assistance with equipment," Mrs McCullough added.
The school's record attempt, which smashed the existing World Record of just over 400 people, was adjudicated by Guinness representative Patricia Magill with assistance from Nigel Cinnamon and Rev Robert Bell.
Principal David Knox was delighted with the school's success and praised the excellent teamwork shown in the run up to the record bid.
"This was a great opportunity for the school to focus on one of its main objectives, ensuring an active and healthy lifestyle and the continued well being of our pupils. It has also been an opportunity for teaching and support staff to work together in order to organise this very challenging event, involving so many pupils," he commented.
