HUNDREDS of Orangemen, bandsmen and spectators descended on Ballyclare on Saturday for the annual Twelfth of July celebrations.
Visitors from as far away as Canada and the USA were among the throngs of people who lined the streets to watch the East Antrim Orange Combine parade, which was hosted by Sixmilewater District LOL No. 10.

More than 70 lodges from Ballyclare, Cloughfern, Carnmoney, Larne, Carrickfergus, Antrim, Randalstown, Killead and Staffordstown, accompanied by bands from across East Antrim and several visiting bands from Scotland, took part in this year's Battle of the Boyne commemoration.

Worshipful District Master of Sixmilewater District, Bro Raymond Chestnutt, was delighted with the huge turnout at Saturday's parade.

"Everything went really well and the weather was very good. There was a very good turnout which was extremely encouraging for us.

"There were a lot of visitors who'd come to the town to see the parade - some from as far away as Canada, America and even China. The whole day went really well," he told the Times.

Newtownabbey's top police officer, Area Commander Paula Hilman, said that Saturday's parade had passed off without major incident.

"I would like to acknowledge the work carried out by the local community and the professionalism of my officers which ensured that the event passed off successfully," she commented.

Meanwhile, the Chief Inspector revealed that officers made 438 alcohol seizures from people drinking in public places during the event.

"The local Police Service worked closely with parade and event organisers and other key partners and took a robust approach to underage and on-street drinking during the Twelfth of July parade. This was part of an overall strategy to reduce the consumption of alcohol in public which often leads to anti-social behaviour and crime.

"We welcome the co-operation we have received from the Orange Order, parade organisers and key partners in addressing this important issue," she added.
