Councillor Lynn Frazer described Wednesday's Shore Road crash as "deeply tragic".

The man was travelling in a Peugeot car along with two other people when it collided with a lorry close to the entrance to Belfast High School, shortly after 2am.
The other people were taken to hospital where one is said to be in a serious condition, while the other is said to be stable.

Police closed the Shore Road at the scene of the accident causing rush hour tailbacks in other parts of the borough.

Traffic coming from Carrick was redirected and drivers were forced to take alternative routes causing knock-on problems, particularly in the Monkstown and Doagh Road areas.

The Alliance woman said: "This was a deeply tragic incident and my thoughts go out to the family and friends of the man who died in the collision. I want to extend my deepest sympathies to them and I hope that those taken to hospital make a full recovery."

The university area representative added: "The Environment Minister must regularly examine road safety policy with a view to making any improvements possible. Accidents on our roads have a terrible toll on our society and every possible effort must be made to prevent this horrific pain for families across Northern Ireland."

The deceased man's family have requested that his name not be made public.
