SEVERAL paramilitary murals in estates around the borough could be painted out as part of the Re-imaging Communities initiative, it has been revealed.
A total of £27,747 has been secured from the Arts Council’s Re-imaging Communities Fund towards mural replacement schemes in areas across Newtownabbey.

At their recent meeting, the council’s Development Committee approved five projects, which will go ahead pending further consultation with local communities and landowners.

The areas included in the latest mural replacement scheme are Longlands, Monkstown, Rathcoole, Elmfield and Ballyclare.

In each area a steering group comprised of the Council’s Good Relations Officer, the landowner and local community representatives will be established to oversee the project, including the appointment of an appropriate artist to engage the community in the design of the replacement artwork.

It is hoped that all of the projects will be completed by March 2011.
