A PUBLIC green within the New Mossley estate is being used as an illegal dumping ground, transforming it from the verdant oasis it should be, into an eyesore and general nuisance for residents who live nearby.
A member of the public contacted the Newtownabbey Times this week to highlight problems which have been ongoing for the past two months at the green to the rear of houses at Ballycraigy Park.
"The mess of the green is unbelievable, " said the caller, who did not wish to be identified for fear of repercussions.
"There is everything from gaming machines, to washing machines, suites of furniture and all sorts of other household rubbish dumped on it.
"From time to time, some of the dumped items are set on fire and this has led to explosions from the various components of the machines, with the noise being very loud and unsettling for the folk who live near by.
"Also, in between all the mess, there are young people riding their scrambler motorbikes, which is creating further noise and nuisance.
"Of course, not only is it illegal for the young ones on scramblers to be using the land for this purpose, with all the rubbish that is lying around, it is also extremely hazardous both for them and for anyone else wanting to use the green."
The caller said the state of the green was bringing down the tone of the whole area, as well as being a danger to those who wished to use it.
"We are calling on the Housing Executive to do something about it, it's an utter disgrace."
Agnes North of New Mossley Community Group said she had been made aware of the situation and spoken with local residents about it.
"I went around the houses there on Sunday night and asked the residents to report any dumping they observe from here on in either to myself by ringing my mobile (07716334408), or to contact the police with a description of those responsible for leaving stuff on the green, the next time it occurs," Agnes told the Times.
"We have also been in touch with Housing Executive to ask that the mess be cleared up."
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Housing Executive confirmed that the community group had been in contact with the District Office on Monday regarding dumping at this location.
"We are inspecting the area in question today, so that arrangements can be made for it to be cleared," said the spokesperson.
"The Housing Executive would urge those engaged in dumping to cease doing so, and make arrangements for unwanted items to be disposed of properly.
"We have not had reports of scramblers being used on this green, but would point out the damage caused by this activity, which is not permitted in these public areas."
